LS Cable & System-LS Electric launches first superconducting solution for IDC

- Superconducting cables and current limiters enable large-capacity power supply in urban areas, enhance economic feasibility and stability, and lead power infrastructure in the AI era.

LS Cable & System-LS Electric ‘Superconducting Solution for IDC’ concept diagram.

LS Cable & System announced on the 22nd that, together with LS Electric, it will launch the world's first superconducting solution for data centers (IDC) and begin full-scale entry into overseas markets such as Korea and Vietnam.

The superconducting solution can transmit 154kV high-capacity power at a low voltage of 22.9kV, allowing power supply to be expanded without building a new substation in the city. Since it does not generate electromagnetic waves, it can be an effective alternative to the NIMBY phenomenon.

LS Cable & System is responsible for supplying and engineering cable systems based on its experience in commercializing superconducting cables for the first time in the world in 2019. LS Electric supplies superconducting current limiters, etc.

The superconducting station, which replaces the existing substation, consists only of a distributor without a transformer. It can be designed at approximately 1/20th the scale of existing substations, making it possible to reduce construction costs and secure economic feasibility.

The superconducting current limiter reacts quickly when a fault current occurs, minimizing damage from short circuit accidents. It plays a role in improving stability by preventing IDC service interruption and reducing the risk of data loss.

Both companies expect that the superconducting system will significantly improve the economics, resident acceptance, and power stability when constructing a new IDC, setting a new standard for power infrastructure technology in the AI era.

LS Cable & System said, “Recently, we are working with the Vietnam Electric Power Research Institute through LS Eco Energy to promote overseas marketing, including promoting its introduction in Vietnam.”
