Fakuma 2021: Circular economy meets digitalization

The Fakuma 2021 international trade fair for plastics processing will be held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from October 12-16. The awaited exhibition will focus on the main themes of circular economy and digital transformation, echoing the dominating development trends of the plastics industry.

As the recognized leading technical event in the industry, up-to-date solution innovations and application developments in different sectors, e.g. injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming and 3D printing, will be unveiled and presented to visitors at Fakuma.

The preparation of the trade fair is currently running at full bore. “The exhibitors want to present their innovations live once again,” said Bettina Schall, Managing Director of P.E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG, the organizer. “That’s why users and customers are looking forward to the physical presentation of new products and technological solutions.”

Fakuma 2021 will implement hygiene measures adopted by Messe Friedrichshafen, which have been extensively coordinated with responsible authorities on the basis of the generally valid Corona Ordinance of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Importance of circular economy underlined

Plastics industry players are intensively engaged in plastics recycling which is not just a buzzword. The shift from a linear to a circular economy presents challenges and opportunities to the industry. In both cases, industry players have to take the recyclability of products and the use of recycled materials into consideration.

According to the market report of German Federal Association for Secondary Raw Materials and Waste Management, the recycling market suffered a noticeable slump in 2020. As the price of new materials was low due to the falling price of crude oil during the COVID-19 pandemic, the gap between prices for new materials and recyclates has widened.

Nevertheless, the association expects the transformation of the plastics industry towards more sustainability to be a positive driving factor for the growth of the recycling market.

At the Fakuma 2021 fairground, plenty of production solutions supporting circular economy will be staged by machine manufacturers and system suppliers.

Meanwhile, visitors can also see a broad range of sustainable chemical and material solutions for applications in different industries. TOSAF is one of the many exhibitors to present sustainability-focused solutions.

The highlights of TOSAF will include color masterbatches for recyclates with a special focus on post-consumer plastics as well as biodegradable masterbatches. Recyclates from post-consumer scrap may show significant differences in their basic color, the company has developed highly efficient masterbatches specially tailored to cover such variations.

Sustainable thermoplastics containing recycled content are increasingly in demand. The polyamide grades ECOBKV30H2.0, ECOBKV35H2.0 and ECOBKV60XF of Durethan ECO range from LANXESS contain 100% recycled glass fiber according to the mass balance principle.

LANXESS’ polyester blend series Pocan ECOT contains a specially recycled post-consumer PET. It is suitable for producing premium finished parts, such as white goods, with properties and quality close to those of virgin material.

Digitization transformation in full swing

Digitization continues to be the mega trend of the plastics processing industry. Increasing digitalization and automation are providing opportunities for improving processes, as well as for increasing systems availability, efficiency and productivity.

Potential offered by digitalization is far from exhausted, and the shortage of skilled personnel is forcing the industry to increase automation in production, commented Sandra Füllsack, Chairperson of the Fakuma exhibitor advisory committee. She is also the Managing Director of motan Holding GmbH.

“We’re still in the initial stages of a development that will certainly continue for years to come. And we have lots of catching up to do where infrastructure and the standardization of interfaces are concerned,” she said.

For the motan group, the company will be highlighting several products with new controllers, including the MINICOLOR SG V volumetric dosing and mixing unit with new controller, the LUXOR SG 50 dryer with new controller and product design including a 150 litre drying bin, the GRAVICOLOR 110 with new product design and optimizations, as well as the Moisture Minder for online moisture measurement.

Personal contact is irreplaceable

Notably, the online tool Fakuma-Virtual will be available to all users until the trade fair opens, which features latest product news and trade fair highlights offered by the exhibitors, facilitating information exchange between suppliers and users.

The organizer does not expect the virtual platform can completely replace personal contact. Therefore the physical Fakuma remains indispensable.
